What to Look for in Potential Leaders

" ... broad thinkers, fast learners, people with the ability to get along with different kinds of people in different cultures, the ability to think analytically as well as creatively and intuitively, a strong character, a drive for excellence, and a desire to help others succeed." p. 12, 13

The traits and qualities listed above is what one executive, featured in the book Leaders At All Levels by Ram Charan, looks for in potential future leaders.

Becoming a Foolish Leader I read I Corinthians 3 this morning and verse 18 really spoke to me in regards to leadership. "Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise." Here is what I journaled. Let no deceive himself One of the great dangers or flaws of a leader is a lack of self-awareness. Resulting in an inflated view of our intellect, character and capabilities leading to an inability to learn and to receive feedback. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, The key part of this verse for me is “in this age” part. In the realities we live in today things change at faster rate than imaginable. We need to be continually thinking and re-thinking our leadership strategies. The shelf life of our leadership learnings is very short. So we may be really wise -- just wise 10 years ago. let him become a fool that he may become wise. This may sound contradictory. Yet there is great wisdom in this statement. For me, to be a fool in this context means two things: 1. Because I do not know a lot, I have a lot of room to grow and learn, which is where I always need to be as a leader in continual growing and learning disposition. 2. I may overlook conventional wisdom (what has been proven to be successful ) and be willing to take...

24 Hours After My Birthday So how old am I? I am not telling. Here is a hint though -- Christian Laettner, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston and Brett Favre were all born in the same year. It is interesting regarding birthdays that we celebrate like crazy in our early years (most notably as children) with elaborate themes and expenses. And as we grow older not so much. Yet as we grow older birthdays take on greater significance and meaning, this becoming more true of myself as I am moving in the age bracket where it is not polite to ask how old I am. Yesterday I was graced in the morning by my family with a short, well thought through, celebration before we went to work and school and later throughout the day I was celebrated individually by friends and family through, gifts, verbal affirmations, voice mails, e-mails, letters, text messages and messages on my Facebook wall. Here is my thought 24 hours after my birthday: Cal Ripken Jr. , possibly my favorite baseball player of all time, shared this at a post game speech after he had broken Lou Gehrigs consecutive game streak: "People have asked me, 'How do I want to be remembered?' And I say, to be remembered at all is pretty special."
