24 Hours After My Birthday

So how old am I?  I am not telling. Here is a hint though -- Christian Laettner, Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston and Brett Favre were all born in the same year.

It is interesting regarding birthdays that we celebrate like crazy in our early years (most notably as children) with elaborate themes and expenses.  And as we grow older not so much.  Yet as we grow older birthdays take on greater significance and meaning, this becoming more true of myself as I am moving in the age bracket where it is not polite to ask how old I am.

Yesterday I was graced in the morning by my family with a short, well thought through, celebration before we went to work and school and later throughout the day I was celebrated individually by friends and family through, gifts, verbal affirmations, voice mails, e-mails, letters, text messages and messages on my Facebook wall.

Here is my thought 24 hours after my birthday:  Cal Ripken Jr. , possibly my favorite baseball player of all time, shared this at a post game speech after he had broken Lou Gehrigs consecutive game streak:

"People have asked me, 'How do I want to be remembered?'  And I say, to be remembered at all is pretty special."

Reality Check This is what I paid today when I filled up. Though it has been a couple of months that I have been staring at these type of numbers, it still a shock to pay a quarter of what my car payment is for a tank of gas. Max Depree in his book Leadership is an Art says "The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality." p.11 And the reality is we are living in a time where a tank of gas is now commanding a price that was once relegated to luxury items. Ministry is becoming all the more complex and the reality check for me as a church leader is to ask these type of questions: What needs to change? What needs to change in our attempts to reach people for Christ? What in our current ministry strategy needs re-thinking or re-tooling? What are our guests really thinking when they come to church? Does the economy move people to seek help -- hence seek after God? or Does it make people more self-centered, and more into a survival mode? Is thoughts of one's eternal destination so far removed in the mire of making it through day or does it cause for a deeper yearning for something beyond our understanding?
