This weekend we started a two-part series "Lead Where You Are," the title of the series inspired by the theme of the 2008 Leadership Summit. So to say that leadership is on mind these days would be an understatement.
One thought: if leadership is influence like many gifted leaders have said, what is an effective way, for me, to influence other leaders? Though there are many, one way would be to give others a list of books that have significantly impacted me. By doing this, they can go to the source of what has helped shape my thinking and overall leadership disposition. Here is a quick list I have come up with:
Pour Your Heart Into It by Howard Schultz -- may be the best book on leadership I have read in the last 15 years. Passion is everything.
Leadership is an Art by Max DePree -- I have given this book away to others more than any other. Max DePree has given me language to articulate the rhythm of leadership.
Leading with the Heart by Mike Krzyzewski -- if I could have coffee or meal with a leader of my choosing -- Coach K would be at the top of my list.
Good to Great by Jim Collins -- the whole book is incredible, but the cost of the book is worth it for the one chapter on "Level 5 Leadership."
Courageous Leadership by Bill Hybels -- Bill Hybels has mentored me from afar for over 10 years through books, cds & conferences.
The One Thing You Need to Know by Marcus Buckingham -- this book has been critical in helping lead through some critical transition times vocationally.
Think Like a Champion by Mike Shanahan -- this book more than any other, has taught me the importance of preparation and discipline.
