Chair Prayer

0319081243a I just came out of hour of prayer called "Chair Prayer."  We have done this for a few years now right before Easter and Christmas Eve where we take an hour and literally pray for every chair in our worship center.  Now for some this may seem a little weird or maybe a bit of a stretch for them spiritually -- regardless,  for me what this communicates is that we are utterly dependent on God and His Spirit to work in the lives of the people that come to one of either of our two Good Friday services and/or three Easter services. 0319081254 Easter is a time when many have made the life-changing decision to receive Christ's gift of salvation and to follow Him.  This weekend is that important  -- at least 1400 prayers worth.

Starbucked I just finished reading Starbucked by Taylor Clark which was easy read for me as the subject matter was coffee -- something that I am very passionate about. This book that takes a look at the sociological, cultural and economic impact that Starbucks has made on our society, also included a great chapter, "Life Before Lattes" on the history of coffee. Here is one finding that I found very amusing given my line of work in a church: "Strangely enough, some of coffee's biggest early boosters were religious conservatives. Many members of the clergy clamored for widespread coffee use because they were annoyed that so many parishioners fell asleep during their sermons." (p. 25) "The Puritans in particular campaigned for coffee as a great soberer and as a promoter of the mental effort necessary to understand the Bible's teachings." (p.25,26)

How I Fill Out My Brackets Everyone I know is filling out a mens college basketball tournament bracket. This is truly the most wonderful time of the year. There is nothing like pageantry and heart that collegiate sports exudes. Now you would think, someone like me, that has been following college basketball avidly since 1978 when Duke loss to Kentucky 92-88 in the NCAA championship game. would have a pretty good grasp on filling out my bracket, when in reality I usually I rank near the bottom. The main reason is that I pick my teams based not necessarily on who I think will win, but I pick based upon who I think will give the Duke University Blue Devils the best chance of winning the whole tournament. Which most people think is crazy being that until the Florida Gators won back to back titles last year and in 2006 -- Duke was the last team to do it 1991 & 1992. Now last year when Duke went loss on in their first round game on the first day -- you talk about a bracket buster -- I moved to last place and stayed their for the next 17 days. Now that is part of the risk, but also part of the fun of it. So here is how I fill out my brackets ... First I advance Duke all the way to the finals regardless of what type of season they may be having or where they may be seeded and this has been made...
