This past Tuesday out on a family outing I thought I had lost something that would have been disastrous to me. It wasn't my keys, nor my cell phone nor something of incredible value, in a monetary sense, but rather a pocket MOLESKINE journal. Fortunately it fell out of my pocket in my car and I discovered it when we got home.
The thought of me losing it prodded me to share why it has become such an essential leadership tool for me.
For the past few years, after reading about the history of the MOLESKINE journals in a magazine article, I have carried one with me everywhere -- too many times I have been out and have been prompted with a potentially great thought or an idea, with the intent to write it down later, only to never be able to recapture the original idea or sometimes forgetting all together.
Here is a partial list of what is in my MOLESKINE Journal:
- Possible future blog post themes with initial thoughts and ideas written out
- Titles of books to read in the future that I have collected from talking with friends and by browsing local bookstores.
- Conference session notes.
- Observations of a weekend service I attended
- Possible future initiatives to move on
- Insights I have gathered from other more gifted leaders that I have had the privilege of sitting down with.
- Possible future sermon series topics or titles.
- Promptings of the Spirit.
- Inspiring Quotes
- A description of a TV or movie scene that could be used to illustrate a future teaching moment.
I have since given these out as gifts to many of the leaders I serve with.
One of my proudest moments as a leader was when we as a team were gathered at a leadership training event and every one on their own brought out their MOLESKINE to take notes.
I hope you might be prodded to get one.
I love my Moleskine!
